Squalane Oil For Deeply Nourished Skin

Every so often a skincare ingredient comes along and is a total game-changer. Squalane is one of those hero ingredients and you’ll be seeing it everywhere. Don’t let its name fool you, squalane oil actually reduces shine, all while smoothing fine lines, calming redness, and supporting the skin’s barrier. Nourishing dehydrated skin while plumping and smoothing your complexion, squalane oil really nails it when it comes to multitasking.

What is Squalane?

You may have noticed two different spellings—squalene vs squalane. Squalane is the hydrogenated version of squalene, which is a naturally occurring liquid found in human sebum (oil). But just like collagen and hyaluronic acid, as we age, our body produces less and less of these key ingredients that keep our skin looking young.

You’re likely more familiar with squalane than squalene because squalane is a more stable form and has a longer shelf life. Not to mention, it’s harvested in a much more ethical manner—and you know how we feel about that. Squalene was also a controversial ingredient as in some practices it was harvested from shark livers—no thank you. Our squalane is vegan and sourced from sugar cane. And if you’re wondering why sugar cane, it’s because the ingredient is highly pure, 100% bio-based, and sustainably sourced.

What Does Squalane Do?

Squalane is a key ingredient for keeping your moisture barrier in check. Having a damaged moisture barrier is likely the reason why your skin is presenting a variety of concerns from dryness and dehydration to redness and irritation. And, in case you forgot, here’s a quick refresher on how the moisture barrier works. Let’s say you suffer from breakouts and have been going heavy on the chemical exfoliants to try and banish your blemishes. Chemical exfoliants are all good when used as directed, but overuse can cause your skin to become tight, red, and dehydrated and can even lead to more breakouts. Enter squalane oil. This incredibly lightweight emollient calms and soothes as it strengthens and repairs. It does double-duty to not only reverse the damage but also prevent more damage, so skin stays moisturized and protected. Plus it’s non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores, making it suitable for all skin types, including acne-prone.

Is Squalane Right For Me?

Long story short, if you want soft, dewy skin for days, then yes. Squalane makes the perfect addition to almost any routine, from oily skin to mature skin and everything in between. And the best part is, it doesn’t have to be its own step unless you want it to be of course. Our favorite method is combining a squalane oil with a moisturizer.

Which Squalane Products Should I Use?

The sure fire way to reap all of the squalane oil benefits is through a face oil. If you’re nervous about using a face oil, don’t be. Our Phyto-Active Conditioning Oil Drops are an amazing squalane-based face oil that strengthens and repairs skin, softens fine lines, increases radiance, decreases redness and works for all skin types.

If you’re still hesitant to jump on the face oil train, try a squalane-based moisturizer in heavier formulations like the Vita E Essential Cream and Restorative Cream, or mix squalane with hyaluronic acid in the HA-Revive Hyaluronic Hydrator for a hydration focus.

Another way to add squalane to lips and extra chapped bits is with our multi-purpose Barrier Balm. It acts as a nourishing salve you can top up throughout the day. If you’re looking for a more intensive treatment, try the Restorative Mask for the ultimate squalane pampering session.

And, you prefer your squalane with a side of vitamin C and SPF, our hybrid skincare, suncare, and complexion tint C-Shield Anti-Pollution Moisturizing Tint will be your new go-to.

You can of course mix and match all these squalane powered products to find a combination that's right for your skin.

When Will I See Results From Squalane?

While the majority of squalane oil benefits will come from continued use, this is one ingredient that offers some immediate results. Upon application, you should notice an instant illumination and skin should feel deeply nourished and comforted.
